Artificial Sun is a Power & a wonder building in Surviving Mars.
Description[ | ]
This marvel of Martian engineering produces colossal amounts of Power. It provides light for nearby solar panels during the night in addition to heating the surrounding area. Consumes vast amounts of Water on startup.
Footprint is 6-to-a-side hex, with solar benefits radiating out to 9-to-a-side hex.
Strategy[ | ]
Optimal solar layout displayed in screenshot. only 1 of the 3 parts of the Solar Panel need to be within the blue "solar radiation" area.
Note the lower and left outer panels that are not functioning in lower image, and the orientation of the red line on them. When removed and placed with red line AWAY from artificial sun, they were night functional.
Good layout for low maintenance costs.[ | ]
65 Large Solar Panels, 6 Small Solar Panels, 3 Triboelectric Scrubbers (set to 6-hex radius). Does not need extra space for cables around the rim. Costs 68 metal in maintenance for 337 extra power.
Here is the layout running. Note that you should always place Large Solar Panels with the red stripe pointing outwards so the Artificial Sun powers them and the Scrubbers scrub them (because the key hex, the one opposite the red stripe, is inside the Artificial Sun's radius).
It is possible to fill all spaces except one with big solar panels, but big solar panels give less energy then small solar panels. So its better to use small ones
if you turn on the sun then add the solar panels you can fit a lot more
